Sometimes your customers understand your brand better than you do.

The most valuable insight in a branding project might not come from the people running the business. It might come from the people buying from it.

When businesses talk about what makes them different, the conversation often follows a familiar path.

Our experience. Our expertise. Our people. Our service.

And while these things might all be true, they're rarely the whole story.

There's often a difference between what a business believes makes it special and what its customers genuinely value.

That's why, at Push Studio, speaking directly with customers is a non-negotiable part of our brand strategy process.

Because before we can communicate what makes a business different, we need to understand why people choose it in the first place.

A conversation that changed the direction of a brand.

When we began working with Alseasons, a Sydney-based hospitality recruitment agency, we were dealing with a business that had built an exceptional reputation over nearly five decades.

They knew their industry, had longstanding customer relationships and delivered a highly personalised service.

But their brand and website weren't communicating that value. In a competitive recruitment market, they looked and sounded much like everyone else.

Our challenge wasn't simply to modernise their identity.

It was to understand what made Alseasons worth choosing.

We began by getting to know the business. We spoke with the team, explored their ambitions and challenged some of the assumptions about their position in the market.

Then we went directly to the people who mattered most. Their customers.

We interviewed clients to understand their experiences, why they continued to work with Alseasons and what they valued about the relationship.

And one comment captured our attention.

"They understand our goals and are trying to achieve our goals."

It wasn't a polished marketing statement. It was a customer explaining, in their own words, what made the relationship valuable.

And it gave us something much more meaningful than another claim about experience or service.

It gave us a direction.

The difference between what you do and why people choose you.

On the surface, Alseasons provides hospitality recruitment and staffing solutions.

But what we uncovered was something deeper.

Their customers weren't simply looking for someone to fill shifts or supply staff. They valued having a recruitment partner who understood what they were trying to achieve and genuinely cared about helping them get there.

The relationship wasn't just transactional. It was built around shared objectives.

That distinction became central to the strategy.

We developed a simple brand promise:

Our goal is to achieve yours.

Five words that captured the spirit of the business, reflected the experience of its customers and gave Alseasons a clear position to own.

Importantly, this wasn't an idea imposed on the business from the outside.

It was already there.

Our job was to recognise it, articulate it and make it the foundation of the brand.

Good strategy changes the creative conversation.

Once we had established what Alseasons stood for, the creative decisions became much clearer.

Rather than following the familiar corporate conventions of the recruitment industry, we developed a brand that felt approachable, personal and full of character.

The visual identity, messaging, photography and website were all designed to express the same idea: a business that puts its customers' ambitions at the centre of everything it does.

The website also needed to work for both employers and candidates, combining a clear user experience with the practical functionality required by a busy recruitment business.

Every element had a reason for being there.

That's the real value of brand strategy. It gives creative work direction, purpose and consistency.

Without it, design decisions can become subjective.

With it, you're building something much more powerful than a new look.

You're building a brand around a genuine competitive strength.

Why we insist on talking to customers.

We've found that some of the most revealing moments in brand strategy come from conversations outside the business.

Customers can tell you things that internal teams simply can't see.

They can explain what first attracted them, what keeps them coming back and what they would miss if your business disappeared tomorrow.

They can also reveal frustrations, misconceptions and opportunities that might otherwise go unnoticed.

And sometimes, the things they value most aren't the things you've been promoting.

That's why we don't approach customer interviews as a box-ticking exercise or an opportunity to collect positive testimonials.

We want to understand the reality of the relationship.

What do customers actually think? What matters to them? How do they describe the experience? And where does the business genuinely stand apart?

We look for recurring themes, unexpected insights and the emotional and practical reasons behind their decisions.

Because one interesting comment might spark an idea. But understanding how that comment fits into the wider customer experience is what gives the strategy credibility.

Your difference might be hiding in plain sight.

Businesses often assume differentiation means inventing something new.

A new promise. A new personality. A new way of describing what they do.

But some of the strongest brand positions come from recognising something that already exists within the business.

Something customers have experienced for years, but nobody has properly articulated.

For Alseasons, that was a genuine commitment to helping customers achieve their goals.

The insight gave us a clear strategic direction and a brand promise that could guide everything from visual identity and messaging to the website and future marketing.

And that's why we believe customer interviews are so important.

Great branding isn't about creating a difference that doesn't exist. It's about uncovering the difference that matters and making sure the world understands it.

Clarity creates competitive advantage.

At Push Studio, we combine research, customer insight and creative thinking to uncover what makes businesses genuinely different.
